When doing a kid’s bathroom remodel for your Atlanta home, there are two objectives to keep in mind. The first is to make it safer for them. The second is to get them to bathe and wash without much prodding and arguing.
Here are some tips for a successful bathroom remodel with children in mind.
Add safety features
When designing a bathroom for kids, safety should always be a priority. Choose slip-resistant flooring, such as textured stone or ceramic tiles. Check a flooring’s R-rating, which measures slip resistance. The higher the R rating, the more preferable the material. But regardless of the flooring you choose, always add bathmats to the bathtub and shower, as well as around the sink and toilet to prevent slipping accidents.
Other safety measures to consider include:
- Adding childproof covers on electrical outlets
- Adding soft covers on faucets to prevent injuries in case they fall against them
- Adding hand supports to help kids move around safely
- Making sure drain covers are attached securely
- Installing anti-scald and temperature control devices to prevent burns
Use adult size fixtures
In designing a child’s bathroom, using kid-sized toilets, sinks, and other fixtures may seem like a good idea. In the long term, however, this is really not a practical solution. Kids will outgrow small fixtures, and when that happens, you will most likely have to do another remodel. Moreover, guests and adult family members might find the need to use the children’s bathroom, and small toilets can be very uncomfortable for them — and for you.
Using adult size toilets and fixtures is the more efficient solution, but make it easy for kids to use the bathroom as well. Consider adding a child’s seat or a potty trainer. Add step stools to allow them to reach the sink, or steps leading to the bathtub to make it easier for them to get into it.
Incorporate your child’s interests in the design
Come up with a theme that would be fun for your kid. Paint the room or add wallpaper in their favorite colors, and add interesting patterns. Or perhaps you can stick a few decals of their favorite cartoon character. Painting the walls and adding stickers or wallpaper are temporary solutions that can easily be changed or removed once they have outlived their purpose. Use paint and other materials designed for bathrooms. These can last longer and will protect the walls from moisture.
Have dual (or more) sinks
If more than one kid is using a bathroom, having two or more sinks can be a good idea. This allows kids to brush their teeth, wash their hands, and do other cleaning tasks at the same time. Be creative in choosing the sinks as well. Children’s sinks come in different colors so you can mix and match to make the bathroom more colorful and appealing.
