Kitchen Remodeling Tips: Always Plan for Value to Get the Best Returns

Youโ€™ve probably heard it before. In doing kitchen remodeling for your Atlanta home, you need to consider the value it adds to the property. The rule of thumb is to not overspend on the project. Plan only for the most cost-effective changes that can enhance the use of your kitchen without going overboard with expensive renovations.

How to Determine the Best Value Option in a Kitchen Remodeling Project

Here are a few ideas to consider.

1. Switch to energy-efficient and practical appliances

A well-designed kitchen starts with the right appliances. After all, you normally use your appliances more than any other feature in your kitchen. Stainless steel appliances have become the norm today, while white appliances are considered old and dated. If you want to give your kitchen an updated look, investing in stainless steel appliances is money well spent.

You should also consider energy efficiency. Choose energy-rated appliances that can help reduce your utility bills without sacrificing convenience and function. Most of these appliances are also highly practical for everyday use. Unless youโ€™re a real kitchen buff who needs to be surrounded by the latest hi-tech gadgets, energy-efficient appliances are the better choice for your home.

When shopping for new appliances, keep in mind that your kitchen should not be too fancy for your house or your neighborhood. When you sell the property down the road, you may end up losing money on your investment if buyers are not willing to pay more for your upscale kitchen additions.

2. Choose the right countertop

In many kitchens today, countertops are playing significant roles. This is especially true if you have an island counter, which easily becomes the main focal point of the kitchen. The right countertop design and material can make or break your kitchenโ€™s appearance and appeal.

Does this mean, though, that you should get granite, quartz, or similar stone countertop that can eat up a significant part of your budget? Not necessarily. Again, it all boils down to the trends in your neighborhood. If high-end stone countertops are standard in your neighborsโ€™ homes, then having them can help make your property comparable to theirs.

However, you might also want to consider less expensive alternatives that can enhance your kitchenโ€™s look and functionality just as effectively. For example, you can opt for the more affordable Grade 2 granite over the top-of-the-line Grade 5 variety. Or, how about a laminate material that mimics the look of granite, but is sold at half the price? Theyโ€™re also highly durable and easy to clean, providing great value for your money.

3. Invest in good cabinetry

Your kitchen cabinets also play a vital role in the overall appearance and function of your kitchen. Youโ€™ll want ample storage, so additional shelves and cabinet extensions may be worthwhile investments.

Choosing materials and finishes is where you can make the difference in cost vs. value. Hardwood cabinets are probably a must in high-end luxury homes, but not in a more standard property. Most people canโ€™t tell veneer from hardwood, so opting for the former can give you considerable savings.

On the other hand, investing in plywood instead of particle boards can give you better value, as plywood is preferred by more buyers and is generally more durable. The bottom line is, when you have to choose between functionality and aesthetics, go for functionality.

Getting the best value for a kitchen remodel can be tricky, so always consult a professional and get all the information you need about the costs and quality of the different components involved.
