Top Bathroom Remodeling Mistakes Every Homeowner Should Know

For many US homeowners, home improvement projects are in the radar for 2022. In fact, a recent survey from Zillow Research found that 72% of homeowners in the country plan to redesign or redevelop an existing portion of their home.

Unplanned aesthetics, improper lighting or ventilation, and overlooking the importance of storage are common bathroom remodeling mistakes.

Population scientist Manny Garcia says, “Most homeowners say they plan to stay in their current home for at least the next three years. And while uncertainty, pandemic precautions, and affordability concerns keep many homeowners in place, most are willing to consider improving their current home.”

Among these projects, bathroom remodeling tops the list. The Zillow survey reported that more than half of those that were surveyed intend to undertake a bathroom remodeling in 2022. They are even willing to pay more for trendy bathroom components such as curbless showers, heated floors, and free-standing bathtubs.

This continues 2021’s trends, as Statisfa found that nearly half of homeowners in the United States implemented bathroom remodeling changes. 33% of them did so because they were no longer satisfied with how their bathrooms looked. Among major renovations, 59% upgraded their bathroom systems, 50% increased the sizes of their shower areas, and 42% did layout renovations.

If you also plan to make changes to your bathroom this year, you already know that the investment will lead to a lot of positive returns. These include improved aesthetics, better functionality and comfort, and even a higher home value. As such, it is important that you properly prepare for the project to ensure that you get exactly what you pay for. To this end, steer clear of these common mistakes.

Being sloppy with aesthetics.

One of the major mishaps that can happen during a bathroom remodeling is the failure to commit to a coherent aesthetic theme. Aesthetics play a major role in the way that your bathroom looks, as well as your resulting satisfaction from it. When homeowners renovate their bathrooms, they run the risk of playing with too many ideas and ending up with too many patterns, mismatched themes, or non-complementary fittings, textures, and finishes.

To avoid this, be very clear about your aesthetic plan for your bathroom. Your chosen theme, colors, and design should provide the foundation for the entire project.

Failing to include proper ventilation and lighting.

Another common mistake that happens during bathroom remodeling is the lack of sufficient lighting or ventilation. Sometimes, homeowners focus on the look of the bathroom so much that they compromise on comfort, functionality, and safety through proper lighting and ventilation.

Improper lighting or ventilation can raise a host of issues; a badly lit bathroom, for instance, can detract from the usefulness of the space, whereas insufficient ventilation can lead to mold formation.

To manage this, set your lighting and ventilation requirements as main priorities that need to be achieved by the end of the project.

Overlooking the need for storage.

Finally, don’t forget that storage spaces in the bathroom are extremely important. In fact, one of the trends for this year is the use of multi-storage fixtures that can provide more than one functionality.
